I guess no other obsession is greater than the obsession of the self. Is there? Obsession of making ourselves better each day from yesterday. Discovering what is good for us, for our physical self, and for our mental health. But do we even unconscionably, ever think about the wellness, and health of our home space and work space we live and spend most of our time in?

Home space, workspace can immensely influence our physical as well as our mental health to a greater extent. Architects and interior designer all over the world are realizing the utmost importance of designing spaces with people’s well–being in mind. It’s very important to create an environment, that stimulate our senses in a positive way, and improve our productivity. The space we live in or spend our time in must have health and wellness benefits to them.

You know I could go on and on talking about topic of wellness, but not because it has become my obsession, but the practice of this habit have influenced me in a very different way. Living this green and healthy kind of life and getting into the routine of it has helped improve all the aspects of my life, from health to physical and psychological in order to achieve that optimal state of well–being.

Being an Interior Designer my job is to help my clients too find wellness and health in their living space. And I am willing to change that for them too. But as I said previously, wellness is so much more than elaborate spa trips or the detox treatments. Those are totally bullshit if you ask me. Wellness covers so many dimensions – from exercise, fitness, skin care, and nutrition to joyful experiences, healthy social connections, relaxation, mindfulness, and slow living. And for me, it also means creating and living in spaces that nourish our body and mind.

And I’m totally not alone in putting emphasis on this latter aspect – wellness-centered design and architecture have definitely been gaining momentum in the last few years.

It’s such a fascinating issue indeed.

I’m pretty convinced that designs that are more focused on wellness and health will become more and more important in the coming years, and soon it will be just as important factor in designing spaces, home space and workspace as functionality or cost-effectiveness.

But you need not worry about the coming years. You can still do things which can help you take your well–being on a different consciousness. So, I tried to round up a couple of tips and tricks on how we can incorporate the concept of wellness and well–being into our own home space. These are very simple things that can still have enormous impacts on how we feel in our immediate environment.

GIVE A MAKEOVER OF WELLNESS TO YOUR HOME SPACE !!!


→ #1 INDOOR PLANTS IMPROVES AIR QUALITY:

Having a green feel within our home space creates healthy environment, and it stimulates our overall well–being. Greens or plants adds tons of wellness benefits to our home space or a workspace. Apart from improving the air quality (which you know how) they do regulate the humidity within the space and remove toxins from the air.

They also provide a natural mood-boosting lift and according to some studies can even reduce stress levels, increase memory retention and concentration, and filter out VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and some pollutants.

Not to mention, they are great and inexpensive design elements as well that can jazz up even the most boring and monotonous or coldest spaces.

There are many indoor plants are available and they are the perfect remedy for each room. I will not bore you with the details but I can share few of my favorite and the places where you can use them.

Orchids or aloe vera are great for the bedroom because. I love smaller succulents for the home office and snake plant or dracaena for the living room. Herbs for the kitchen for an ultimate wellness kick. Don’t forget about the bathrooms either, bamboo, ferns, or a philodendron can transform that space into a wellness retreat in an instant.

→ #2 HUMIDIFIER IS GREAT FOR MANY REASONS:

For the most part of the year, air humidifier is one of the most important items in my home. But, mostly it is used in winters. Why? Because it has many health and wellness benefits. Getting a humidifier may help you avoid getting sick in winter, but it can also give you softer, more glowing skin, and even help preserve your real wood furniture..

→ #3 ZEN INTERIOR SPOT:

Our home space should be the place where we feel most calm and peace, and what better style to promote these feelings of serenity than a zen inspired space? The definition of zen is slang for feeling peaceful and relaxed. An example of zen as an adjective is to have a zen experience, how you feel during a day at the spa.

And I think we all should have a zen spot. It need not be huge in size. Minimal is the better.

All that place of zen should have is a place of happiness. Whenever you walk in to that space you should feel happy and calm. This will help you tackle with your stress if you have any. If not nothing like it. Having a zen spot will help you boost your creativity and peace.

→ #4 NOTHING BEATS COMFORT.

Any Interior Designer should aim for their clients comfort first. That should be the only priority and others are just the add-ons to that. Aesthetic and beauty does matter, but what good is it for if it’s not comfortable?

The most comfortable part of any living person or even an animal is their sleep. That is the thing which helps you recharge and rejuvenate yourself. You must take extra effort to select your mattress as it is a serious matter. It will determine your sleep quality. Today many mattress companies are offering people to select the mattress that suits them and they are offering trials as well. Take advantage of it.

Finalizing the mattress isn’t enough. Right? The bedding is as important as the mattress itself – especially the pillows. They should be tough, but comfortable at the same time. The fabrics that we use for our bedding also plays a major role. Hence prefer natural fabrics like cotton or linen over other wacky fabrics.

Next comes the seating. Which are sofa and couches, chairs, and most of all your office chairs. You should choose them with the same care and concern as you did for your bedding and mattress – after all, you are going to spend many hours in them all day, and you wouldn’t want the constant backache. Would you? Instead of going for the look emphasis on comfort. ALWAYS!

→ #5 PLEASE ORGANIZE YOUR CLUTTER:

Can not say enough about this one. Nobody can educate you enough on how important it is to de–clutter and how to do it. Your clutter can cause anxiety, discomfort, and it should have no place in your home or even in your mind.

If you are stuck from where to start, then the better place to start is from where you are standing right now. The moment you start to organize things the way to de-clutter will get smoother.

Make a list of things which needs to be organized and assign them day or a time. Once you organize your clutter make sure you make one more list which reminds you not to let the clutter get to you again. Have a habit of keeping things where they belong after use, and you won’t have to worry about clutter anymore.

→ #6 FRAGRANCE IS A SIGN OF A GREAT SOUL:

Scents are an integral part of any health routine. Do you remember how certain smell triggers emotions in us? Some scents brings back memories and some of them truly alter the course of our mood. Some do hit us hard and strong. But that is the fun of scents.

You don’t have to be an aromatherapy expert to take full advantage of the many emotional and wellness benefits of scents though.

A good scent can trigger the happy thoughts in us, and as you have observed today many people are advocating about how important role our smelling sensation plays in our life. Do some research and get to know your happy fragrance.

We do get essential oil diffusers in the market today with all kinds of scents. Some of them are electrical and some of them are organic. My personal favorite is the one which gives me a feeling of spa. I love how spa’s smell. It keeps me calm and peaceful.

I use a different smell in different rooms. I even use scents in my car so while I am driving, I like feeling in a certain way to keep me focused on roads, while I enjoy my ride.

It’s such a simple wellness trick that still has enormous benefits on our mood and well–being (just make sure you buy 100% pure essential oils, not fragranced oils).

→ #7 BENEFITS OF NATURAL LIGHT SOURCES:

Lights are the best source of triggering different kinds of moods. It is the most important elements in home space design today. But instead of focusing more on the artificial source of light, you should consider more of a natural source of light for your home space.

Something tells me that natural light can provide a tremendous health and wellness boost. It has certainly for me. And, there are numerous studies that emphasize that it improves productivity, alertness, mood, and overall psychological health. It’s also incredibly important to our natural circadian rhythm.

Exposure to natural light during the day is strongly linked to energy, mood, sleep and overall quality of life, which lack of natural light is implicated in insomnia, irritability, distraction and depression.

I try to be very mindful of light in my projects. I never try to cover the area that provides natural light. Such as windows, either big or small. I always suggest my clients to go for the sheer curtains, as even if they are are drawn still they let in as much sunlight as possible.

If the weather permits you must open the windows of your house, and draw the curtains aside in the morning to let sunshine and fresh air in.

Another important thing to pay attention to at home is blue light. During the day, the blue light in sunlight boosts our attention, memory, energy levels, reaction times, and overall mood. … Blue light suppresses the release of melatonin in our brains, which leads to a lower quality of sleep, which in turn can contribute to a variety of negative health effects.

→ #8 PLAY OF TEXTURES

TEXTURES, AN INVISIBLE SENSATION. Texture is perceived by touch, for example, when we feel the bark of a tree. … Visual textures suggest feel sensations such as softness, roughness, hardness. In this way it intervenes in our perception and feelings that creates a work of art.

Texture adds an additional emotional trigger in addition to shape and color through touch and feel. Textures allow you to arouse feelings of attraction or rejection, and you can create a strong emotional effect.

The texture stimulates two different senses: sight and touch. There are four types of texture in art: actual, simulated, abstract, and invented texture.

→ #9 COLORS ARE SIGNIFICANT:

I love the theory of how colors matter to our metal health. They affect largely on how a person feels regarding certain colors. To you it maybe just about personal taste and choice. But it does alter, and influence your mood, and especially your well–being.

I always try to get it across my clients. You may have seen a specific color somewhere and cannot get it out of your mind. (I know it happened to you too) but, have you ever wondered why is that so? It was been there for the same purpose to register in your mind. Brands often do so to set their brands apart.

But does that mean you should use that color in your home space too? Big NO NO!

Every color has a significant effect on your mind and your mood. Experts use that to their advantage. I suggest you must too.

There are some color trends that are more or less generally accepted: neutrals and natural colors are said to be calming (no wonder most spas are a mixture of white and natural), red is stimulating, green is associated with calm and balance, yellow is energizing, blue is cooling, black is dramatic. But I also think that various colors incite different emotional responses in all of us, so it’s wise to factor in personal preferences when choosing colors, instead of just blindly following these color therapy advice.

You may not repaint your entire home space, but you can add the objects of the color that plays a significant role in your life. It will definitely help you keep a healthy mind.

→#10 PERSONAL FINISHING TOUCHES:

I have always seen Interior Designers emphasizing on decorative items. Yes! they are an important elements to design. They complete the look of the space. But they have to be not what you like. They are suppose to be what your client likes or something that represents their feeling.

They maybe sometime be small in size, but they are no small in feeling department to your client. Sometime a piece of stone has more significance to someone, than a huge decorative flower pot or a vase.

Fill your home space with these finishing touches which help trigger some emotions you. Those emotions can be calm, happy, nostalgic etc.Just looking at them will improve your wellness aspect as well. For me, it’s some personal photographs, a white design bowl with fresh fruit on the kitchen counter, and fresh flowers on my coffee table.
